10 Food Items to Take Home From #PureGrenada

Can you believe that there are only 2 days left in August?!? Feels like the year has just started and now we’re already hitting September. Time flies so quickly, especially when you’re having fun.School is about to be re-opened and friends, family and visitors have already started going back.

One thing I like to do when my family visits, is ensure that when they leave, they go back with something they’ll love and definitely #PureGrenada made. In this post, I’m sharing a few food items you can use as going away gifts.

1) Snacks. If you come to Grenada and you leave without having at least one of these, then you didn’t truly experience Grenada. 🙂 Except for Nutmeg and Paw Paw (Papaya) Balls which I just recently discovered, these are snacks I grew up on: Kumar, Ground Nut Sugar Cake, Channa, Tamarind (Tambran) Balls, Coconut Candy, Ginger Fudge.

2) Breadfruit Flour. Most likely you won’t be able to include an entire breadfruit in your suitcase, so this product from Henwood Products may be your best alternative and it’s gluten free. Use breadfruit flour to make things you’d usually make with regular flour. Try it to make bakes, bread, muffins, dumplings and just about anything you like. You can pick up a packet at the Marketing & National Importing Board on Young Street, St. George’s.

3) Chocolate. For all the chocolate lovers, as myself, this goes without saying. These are a definite must-have! These dark chocolates: The Grenada Chocolate Company (Grenada Chocolate) and Grenada Cocoa Farmers’ (Jouvay Chocolate) are absolutely amazing. They come in various percentages of chocolate to cater for persons who prefer less dark chocolate and they both taste really good. You can also get these chocolates in different flavours such as ginger or nutmeg and can be found in most supermarkets throughout the island.

4) Cocoa Crunch. As the name suggests, this is a crunchy, dark chocolate snack made by Caribbean Naturals and consists of organic cocoa beans, spices and raw sugar cane. Unlike the chocolate bars, cocoa crunch has a unique roasted dark chocolate, sugary taste which I love. It can also be found in most major super markets throughout the island.

5) Summer Juice. Produced by a local company, Summer, these juices are made from fresh, locally grown citrus fruits. The juices are packaged in either 1.75 litre or 330ml bottles which are perfect for travel. The passion fruit is my favourite which I prefer to have chilled.

7) Baron Hot Sauce & Ginger Sauce. These are also a must-have. If you are from the Caribbean, you know that Hot Sauce is a staple in almost every household. This one from Baron is just right for me. With a mustard base, this hot sauce will add life to any pot or a hot plate of food! The ginger sauce is amazing and works well as a salad dressing.

8) Jam and Jelly. I must admit that I am not a fan of jams and jellies. I always thought them to be too sweet, but these from De La Grenade are actually not very sweet and come in a wide range of flavours The nutmeg and guava are really popular. Couple this with your breadfruit flour bread. 🙂

9. Cocoa. Nothing can beat a good cocoa tea made from cocoa balls. I don’t think I know of any Grenadian who hasn’t had cocoa tea when growing up. The tea can be made using either cocoa balls or cocoa powder. Either way, they both make some really good tea.

10. Spices. Since we’re known as the isle of spice, I definitely can’t leave spices out of this list. These spices are packaged in a calabash bowl which come in various sizes. This one a bit large, but there are smaller travel friendly sizes which can fit snugly in your suitcase. You can find packages like these in the market or from gift shops in St. George’s.
